Kenya Leads Maritime Security Strategy to Safeguard Shared Waters

Kenya is hosting a regional workshop in Mombasa from 2 to 6 November 2026 to develop a coordinated maritime security strategy for the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Western Indian Ocean. Representatives from twelve countries and regional and international partners are working on a shared framework to address piracy, illicit trafficking, illegal fishing and threats to maritime infrastructure. Kenya Navy Deputy Commander Brigadier Sankale Kiswaa called for harmonised operations, stronger information sharing and improved legal frameworks. The workshop is expected to produce a regional risk register, a maritime security strategy and an implementation plan with assigned responsibilities and measurable indicators.
