Plant health: Wave Research inaugurates the Dr Katherine Kahn Observatory in Bingerville

The regional plant health observatory, named the Dr Katherine Kahn Observatory, was inaugurated on October 16, 2026, at Wave Research’s headquarters in the science and innovation hub of Félix Houphouët-Boigny University in Bingerville. It aims to strengthen plant disease monitoring, scientific cooperation and prevention of cross-border phytosanitary threats. ICIPE Director General Dr Abdou Tenkouano called for continuous surveillance and earlier detection of biological threats, while a memorandum formalized a partnership between ICIPE and WAVE Research. WAVE, which works on viruses, bacteria and fungi, is also planning a research station in Djékanou, Côte d’Ivoire.

Lagos halts unauthorised wetland reclamation over flood risks

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu warned residents and developers against building on wetlands and drainage channels, saying their destruction worsens flooding and coastal erosion. Since September 2025, the state has suspended reclamation on wetlands, floodplains and lagoon fronts where developers lack the required environmental and drainage approvals. Sanwo-Olu said Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, around 15 per cent of it plastic, much of which enters drains and canals. He urged residents to reduce single-use plastics and stop dumping rubbish in drains, and cited investments in drainage, mangrove restoration and tree planting.

Scientists name newly discovered plant species after Messi

Scientists named a newly identified plant species Salvia messii in honour of Argentine football star Lionel Messi. Found in the Andes of central and southern Peru, the endangered mint-family plant is threatened by climate change and forest fires. Its light blue and white flowers resemble the colours of Argentina’s national team jersey. Research led by Paúl Gonzáles with Rolando Uría and Jean Capcha Ramos was published in the October 2026 issue of Phytotaxa.
