Kenya is quietly exploring alternative protectionist measures to shield its domestic sugar sub-sector from a potential influx of cheap imports from the Comesa region following the expiration of its 24-year sugar safeguard regime on November 30, 2025. This long-standing protective measure allowed Nairobi to impose strict import quotas on sugar from the 21-member Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa).
