Kenya, Netherlands Begin Plan for Nairobi Flood Warning System Ahead of El Niño

Kenya and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Nairobi have launched a scoping study for a Nairobi Flash Flood Early Warning System, conducted by engineering firms Haskoning and Rebel. The aim is to reduce deaths and property damage as recurring floods in Nairobi have displaced thousands and caused economic losses estimated at over KSh64 billion annually. The Kenya Meteorological Service warns of a 90-96% chance of El Niño persisting through end of year, bringing above-normal rainfall.
