Kenya Railways loss widens to Sh28 billion as SGR posts first surplus

State-owned Kenya Railways Corporation's net loss widened to Sh28.16 billion in the year ended June 2025, from Sh27.68 billion the previous year. The standard gauge railway (SGR) posted its first operating surplus of Sh181.7 million, driven by increased freight and passenger revenues, despite overall losses. The metre gauge railway continued to lose about Sh2.1 billion as revenues fell to Sh2.2 billion. Total KRC revenues rose to Sh30.3 billion, supported by increased government grants.
