Khartoum... a Sudanese city tainted by the flames of war

Many residents of Khartoum have returned after the army regained control of the city in 2025, hoping to resume their lives, but face harsh living conditions, including power and water outages, soaring prices, and destroyed infrastructure. The Shambat bridge remains partially destroyed, and the presidential palace is in ruins, reflecting the damage caused by the war that started in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. Some, like businessman Imad Khaled Ahmed, regret their return, while others, like Suad Mohamed Idriss, deal with stolen belongings and difficulty purchasing food. The army is promoting reconstruction and reopening infrastructure, but the situation remains fragile.
