Kherson braces for return of war as localised Russia-Ukraine truce ends

The six-day local truce in the Kherson region, the longest multi-day pause between Russia and Ukraine, ended on Sunday night with no reported violations and no extension announced. It enabled hundreds of besieged residents of Russian-occupied Oleshky to be evacuated in a rare joint operation. Ukraine’s military said it evacuated another 167 civilians, including 22 children and 21 people with limited mobility. Elsewhere, Russian strikes left hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian households without power, while Russian authorities reported major damage to an industrial site after Ukrainian drone attacks in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
