Kindiki Warns of Evictions in Some Nairobi Areas During El Niño, Plans Temporary Shelters

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki warned that residents living in flood-prone areas of Nairobi could be evacuated to temporary shelters if El Niño rains pose a safety threat. The government has mapped 227 flood hotspots across 17 sub-counties, including Mukuru, Pipeline, Kibera, and Lang’ata, and has prepared 27 drop-off points and shelters, mainly schools and public facilities. Residents in high-risk areas will receive alerts and evacuation orders in a timely manner, with organized procedures to ensure safety. The Ministry of Health has rolled out a plan to distribute 10 million treated mosquito nets, and the Ministry of Energy is inspecting power lines to prevent electricity disruptions caused by heavy rains.
