More than 11,000 of the 16,238 inmates at Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa are in pretrial detention, accounting for about 68% of the prison population. During a visit on October 15, 2026, Justice Minister Guillaume Ngefa Atondoko Andali and Prosecutor General Firmin Mvonde Mambu heard inmates complain about detention conditions and appeal for release measures. The minister called for medical assessments of inmates who might qualify for humanitarian release, while the prosecutor general carried out several releases from among 108 cases reviewed. Designed to hold 1,500 people, the prison currently houses 16,238 inmates.

SEHRB and Intersociety allege killings and torture in South-East

A coalition comprising SEHRB, the Oganihu Igbo Development Foundation and Intersociety called for an independent investigation into alleged killings, torture, enforced disappearances and deaths in custody linked to security operations in south-east Nigeria. It said detainees had been transferred outside the region, including to Wawa Barracks, and urged an inquiry into unidentified bodies in mortuaries in Imo State. The coalition highlighted Calista Ifedi, who allegedly died in custody after being arrested with her husband in 2021 and was reportedly buried in a shallow grave at Wawa; it called for custody and medical records to be disclosed and her burial site identified. It also cited the reported detention of Ozioma Elizabeth Onyeaka for more than five years and the arrest of Esther Okwudili Egbom during a night prayer programme in Aba in February 2025.
