KRA Targets 1 Million Landlords in Rental Income Tax Crackdown

Kenya’s Revenue Authority (KRA) has identified more than one million landlords who allegedly collect rent without declaring it, using a digital system that cross-checks property records and tax filings. It plans to use eRITS, launched in April 2025 and linked to the eCitizen portal, to identify non-compliant property owners. Resident landlords earning between Ksh288,000 and Ksh15 million annually face a final tax of 7.5% on gross rental income, filed monthly by the 20th. KRA estimates that tax evasion, counterfeiting and illicit trade cost the government about Ksh153 billion a year, with rental income accounting for roughly 65% of the losses.

The 2026 budget allocated CFAF 2,031.15 billion to the BIP out of a general budget of CFAF 8,683.9 billion, or 23.4%; these are budgeted credits, not actual spending.
