KRA unearths Sh56m smartphone tax evasion scheme

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is pursuing an importer and a clearing agent after uncovering Sh56 million in undeclared taxes on a shipment of mobile phones imported through Eldoret International Airport. Investigators found 55,607 basic smartphones declared for only 3,000 devices, along with 309 high-end phones that were undeclared, highlighting the challenge of assessing mixed cargo shipments of high-value electronics. Two individuals are facing prosecution in connection with this tax evasion scheme.
