The Kenyan government received four male mountain bongos from the Czech Republic on April 28, 2026, to boost the population of this rare species. These animals, raised in European zoos for over 11 years, have been transferred to the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, increasing the total number of bongos to 102. The wild mountain bongo population has drastically declined from 150 in 2021 to just 66 in 2025 due to habitat loss and poaching.
