The BCEAO’s regional office in Côte d’Ivoire, based in Man, says 500 CFA franc coins, like other banknotes and coins it issues, must be accepted in transactions. The obligation applies in particular to sellers of goods and services and to creditors. The BCEAO says refusing one of its means of payment in a WAEMU member state is an offence, but does not specify the applicable penalties. Mutilated or torn banknotes and worn or damaged coins can be exchanged free of charge at its counters.
