The Lagos State House of Assembly held a public hearing on the proposed amendment of the Magistrates’ Courts Law, 2015. The bill proposes to increase the mandatory retirement age for magistrates from 60 to 65 years or 35 years of service, whichever comes first. It also aims to raise the financial jurisdiction of magistrates from N10 million to N25 million to alleviate the burden on higher courts and enhance access to justice.
