Lagos Assembly moves to raise magistrates’ retirement age to 65

The Lagos State House of Assembly has begun considering a proposal to raise the retirement age for magistrates from 60 to 65 years. This initiative is part of the Magistrate Courts Amendment Bill 2026, aimed at strengthening the magistracy and improving the working conditions for magistrates. Oladipo Ajomale, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, noted that this measure could promote continuity in ongoing court cases and reduce disruptions caused by retiring magistrates.
