The Lagos State Government dismissed reports that 10,430 new HIV infections occurred in 2025, clarifying the figure represents newly diagnosed cases, not fresh infections. Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, CEO of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, stated many contracted the virus years earlier. Lagos conducted 504,800 HIV tests in 2025 with a 2.4% positivity rate, and 179,229 tests in Q1 2026 with a positivity rate of 0.9%. Additionally, 147,904 people are on antiretroviral treatment with 97% viral suppression, and Lagos becomes the first sub-national government in Nigeria to directly procure ARVs.
