Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said enforcement of mandatory social health insurance will begin on January 1, 2027, giving residents until December 31, 2026, to obtain coverage. The new Lagos Private Health Plans will complement Ilera Eko, which serves vulnerable residents and informal-sector workers, and will cover salaried employees and businesses. Twenty-one health maintenance organisations have endorsed participation in the plans. Sanwo-Olu also said providers must stabilise emergency patients before addressing payment or insurance coverage.
