Langeberg council questioned over R293,323 cost of Steenkamp inquiry
The disciplinary inquiry into former Langeberg deputy mayor Johnny Steenkamp cost R293,323, according to the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus), which has called for the spending to be investigated. The party says the process, launched in June 2024 after Steenkamp identified 87 errors in a proposed municipal budget, was politically motivated. The council found Steenkamp guilty on one charge and imposed a sanction, but provincial minister Anton Bredell later overturned both, citing, among other issues, a failure to comply with the rules of natural justice. The legal costs were raised at a council meeting on October 21.
