Latin America: Pope Leo XIV begins tour after surgery

Three weeks after surgery for lung cancer, Pope Leo XIV began a 12-day tour of three Latin American countries on Friday. The 71-year-old arrived in Montevideo after a 13-and-a-half-hour flight from Rome and said he felt better than he looked, crediting God, his doctors and his healthy lifestyle for his recovery. Crowds welcomed him in his popemobile before he joined Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi for an official reception at Plaza Independencia. The Vatican estimated that 30,000 people turned out to greet him and attend his first event in the city.
