Laundry rooms to be turned into cells to tackle prison overcrowding

The UK government is spending £110 million to create more cells in prisons in England and Wales. This budget will be used to convert unused spaces, such as offices and laundry rooms. Justice Secretary Alex Norris announced that 4,500 prisoners are expected to be released in tranches starting in October, but those convicted of serious crimes, such as rape and manslaughter, will be excluded from this scheme.
