Liberia is squandering the moral authority it claims at the UN

For the past nine months, Liberia has used its experience of prolonged armed conflict to serve as a principled voice in UN debates on global humanitarian crises. Yet, as the country prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in December, it is hosting deportees expelled from the United States, contravening its Constitution and UN conventions. In September 2025, Liberia signed an agreement with the Trump administration to accommodate deported foreigners, with the first 20 of an expected 1,200 deportees arriving in August 2026, drawing widespread condemnation.
