Local development: UNDP supports local authorities in mobilizing funding

At the fourth Local Authorities Fair, held in Abidjan from October 15 to 17, 2026, UNDP reaffirmed its commitment to helping Ivorian local authorities turn their needs into fundable investment projects. Resident Representative Blerta Cela said investors fund well-structured projects rather than needs alone, urging municipal and regional councils to build strong project portfolios. UNDP offers support with setting priorities, preparing proposals and finding partners, including for waste management, markets and solar lighting projects. The assistance is part of a 2026–2030 cooperation programme worth nearly $100 million, and the fair also saw the launch of SIKA Local, focused on local investment and the green transition.

Authorities will maintain a safety stock equal to one month of national consumption; CSS reserves are estimated at about 30,000 tonnes, and the ministry is monitoring the price gap because imported sugar is currently cheaper.

Jonathan and Dangote call for jobs and a non-kinetic approach to defeat insecurity

At the presentation of former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar’s book, *Beyond the Bullets: Policing Terrorism in a Democratic System*, Goodluck Jonathan and Aliko Dangote called for greater investment in jobs and social development to tackle terrorism in Nigeria. Jonathan urged the government to revive the Almajiri schools programme, established under his administration to equip vulnerable youths with practical skills, and the Great Green Wall project, intended to support agriculture and create jobs. Dangote argued that military force alone could not defeat terrorism and urged businesses to partner with the government to create jobs and drive economic growth.
