Five artisanal miners died from suffocation in a mining shaft in Kasulo-Rail, Kolwezi, Lualaba, in a residential area where artisanal mining is unregulated by SAEMAPE. The victims were found in a 17-meter-deep gallery, where a fire is believed to have caused oxygen depletion. Four bodies were recovered on October 1st, and the supervisor’s body was found in a nearby house the day before.
