Luigi Mangione to use psychiatric defence in healthcare CEO murder case

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, will argue a psychiatric defence, claiming he was in a state of 'extreme emotional disturbance' at the time of the December 2024 killing. Judge Gregory Carro said on Wednesday that Mangione's lawyers informed him of this defence strategy. Under New York law, a successful claim could reduce a murder charge to manslaughter, resulting in a lighter sentence. The words 'delay', 'deny', and 'depose' were found on the ammunition, referencing health insurance claim practices.
