Lula and Bolsonaro draw thousands to rallies on eve of Brazil election

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro drew thousands of supporters to their final rallies ahead of Brazil’s presidential run-off. At Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach, 80-year-old Lula urged voters to choose between someone who kisses the Brazilian flag and someone who kisses the American flag, referring to his opponent’s ties to Donald Trump. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, won 47 percent in the first round, narrowly ahead of Lula’s 45 percent. A CNT/MDA poll released Saturday put Bolsonaro at 46.3 percent and Lula at 45 percent, within the poll’s 2.2-point margin of error.

The ceasefire and memorandum of understanding signed in June have collapsed: Iran has closed the strait, while Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.
