Macky Sall’s candidacy undermines AU rules, Africa’s interests

On March 27, the African Union Commission announced that the candidacy of former Senegalese president Macky Sall for the position of United Nations Secretary-General was not adopted. Although Burundi presented this candidacy, its role as AU Chair was deemed misleading. Twenty AU member states, including Senegal, expressed their opposition to the candidacy within 24 hours, leading to the rejection of the decision.
