Makala Central Prison: Around 200 Sick Inmates Must Be Examined by a Doctor Every Day

Justice Minister Guillaume Ngefa Atondoko Andali said that more than 200 sick inmates at Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa need to be examined by a doctor each day. During an October 15, 2026 visit with Prosecutor General Firmin Mvonde Mambu, he heard about medical-care challenges at a prison holding 16,238 people despite a capacity of 1,500. Authorities plan to assess inmates who may qualify for humanitarian release based on medical reports; 108 people had been identified, and a few symbolic releases were carried out. Ngefa said he would return before the end of the year to review progress.
