On May 1, 2026, the General Directorate of Commerce, Consumption, and Competition of Mali announced the receipt of over 830 tanker trucks in Bamako, despite a blockade imposed by the jihadist group Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin since September 2025. This blockade has led to a fuel shortage in the capital, with closed gas stations and long queues. The Malian Armed Forces, supported by Russian paramilitaries, have implemented a military escort system to ensure the safety of fuel convoys. The government has also signed an agreement with importers to expedite customs procedures.
