Man Who Chased and Fatally Stabbed Victim Gets 50 Years in Prison

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) secured a 50-year prison sentence against 48-year-old Sebby Roy Oyugi for the murder of David Omondi Haya on June 3, 2021, at Mamboleo Junction in Kisumu. Justice Joe M. Omido of the Kisumu High Court delivered the guilty verdict on April 16 and the sentence on June 8. According to the prosecution, Oyugi grabbed a knife from a mutura vendor, chased the unarmed victim, and stabbed him in the back, piercing the left lung and causing fatal haemorrhage. Two eyewitnesses placed him at the scene, and DNA evidence from the Government Chemist matched the victim's blood on the knife. The defence of intoxication and temporary insanity was rejected, as the judge ruled voluntary intoxication is not a disease of the mind under Section 12 of the Penal Code.
