Mapping how France’s protest wave spread across Europe

Nearly two months after high school students first walked out over deteriorating school buildings, protests continue in France and now focus on the cost of living, wages and social housing. On Saturday, 146,000 people rallied nationwide, including 46,000 in Paris, according to the Interior Ministry; unions put the figures at 250,000 and 75,000. Police used tear gas and batons in Paris and Lyon, amid reports of violence and looting at some demonstrations. ACLED data recorded more than 1,200 protests and riots involving at least 100 people across France between September 15 and October 30.
