Meet Keisha Lance Bottoms, First Black Woman Elected Governor of a US State

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia’s gubernatorial election against Republican Rick Jackson, according to US media projections. The former Atlanta mayor and senior adviser to Joe Biden will become Georgia’s first female governor and the first Black woman elected governor of a US state, succeeding Republican Brian Kemp. Her victory marks a shift in a state where Republicans had held the governorship for more than two decades and where Black voters have helped strengthen the Democratic coalition. On the same night, Stacey Plaskett was elected governor of the US Virgin Islands, while Byron Donalds won Florida’s governorship.
