Metalkol case: Chengtun Congo Resources denies illegal mineral purchases and funding the Kabila clan

Chengtun Congo Resources (CCR), the Congolese subsidiary of Chengtun Mining Group, rejects allegations connected to a National Security Council mission at the Metalkol site in Lualaba. At a press conference, its counsel, Guy Mafuta Kabongo, said CCR buys only traceable minerals and requires legal documents and proof that taxes owed to the state have been paid. The company denies commercial or financial ties to the Hosanna cooperative, a cooperative reportedly linked to Lualaba Governor Fifi Masuka Saini, and rival Luilu Ressources, and says it does not use armed military personnel. CCR says Kalongwe Mining could not have paid dividends before 2024, after its relationship with GICC ended, and demands a public apology and publication of its right of reply within 48 hours, warning it may take legal action.

Dele Momodu accuses APC of using statistics to mislead Nigerians

Dele Momodu, media and communications deputy director-general for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential campaign and a supporter of Atiku Abubakar, accused Bola Tinubu’s government of using economic statistics to mislead Nigerians. Speaking on Channels Television, he said the APC attacks the World Bank and The Economist when their assessments criticize Nigeria’s economic direction or borrowing. Momodu urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the voters’ register, contrasting the APC’s claimed 12 million members with 103 million registered voters. He said politically unaffiliated voters—the “floaters party”—could influence the 2027 presidential election.

US Lobbying Firm Files FOIA Request to Reveal Tinubu’s $700 Billion Mining Deal

US political advisory and lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York says it filed a FOIA request with the US State Department on Thursday for the $700 billion mining memorandum of understanding signed by Nigeria and the United States, along with records of its negotiations. The firm says it acted because President Bola Tinubu has not disclosed the deal’s details and Nigerians are demanding transparency about their natural resources. It supports US access to critical minerals but says protections for affected communities are needed, and it plans to publish the documents if it receives them. Nigeria’s Presidency had not responded to the filing at the time of publication.
