Methane emissions: Ogun State and federal government intensify investigation in Ijebu-Ode

Following four gas-emission incidents in Ijebu-Ode and nearby communities, Ogun State has stepped up cooperation with the federal government to identify the source and prevent further occurrences. A team of experts from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), led by Deputy Director Omonedo Prosper, is examining the emissions with development partners and state officials. The government says it will promptly release the findings, implement the team’s recommendations and provide health monitoring in affected areas, including Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu East and Odogbolu. Professor Ikhane Phillips of Olabisi Onabanjo University said geochemical and geophysical investigations could establish the gas’s composition, source and underground movement.
