Miami judge rules federal noncitizen voting law violates US Constitution

A US federal judge in Miami ruled that a law criminalizing voting by non-citizens is unconstitutional, marking a setback for Trump's administration amid efforts to combat election fraud ahead of November midterms. Judge David Leibowitz dismissed charges against Chelsea Cox, a Florida resident originally from Jamaica, who was accused of voting illegally in 2020. He stated that only states, not the federal government, have the authority to set voter qualifications, and that Florida can prosecute Cox under its own laws. The ruling applies only to Cox's case, though about 45 similar cases are pending nationwide.
