Microfinance: 849.9 billion CFA francs in loans, but default rate twice the norm

Senegal has an outstanding microfinance loan portfolio of 849.9 billion CFA francs as of the end of 2025, serving over 4.7 million members and clients. However, 6% of these loans are in default, twice the prudential norm of 3%, indicating repayment difficulties. Minister Dr. Alioune Dione urged institutions to diversify funding sources and comply with new sector regulations.
