Mitchells Plain initiative uses spinning to guide youth away from gangs

In Mitchells Plain, the Supporting People in Need (SPIN) initiative uses car spinning to teach young people driving skills, discipline and confidence while connecting them with their community. Shahim Bell, who grew up in the area, hopes to turn their passion for motorsport into opportunities to learn and grow in a neighbourhood affected by gang violence. His interest in mechanics deepened after his father was murdered when Bell was 12 and he went to live with his grandfather, an engine builder. Bell and fellow volunteers use spinning gatherings to bring residents together and support young people.
