More Than a Slip: The Dangers of Falls in Old Age

Falls are a significant risk for older adults in Nigeria: local studies report rates ranging from about 23% to over 40%, while international research finds that 25% to 33% of people aged 70 and older fall each year. Age-related changes in balance and strength can contribute, alongside medical conditions, medication use and home hazards such as slippery floors and poor lighting. Falls can cause fractures, head injuries, loss of independence or death, while fear of falling may reduce activity and increase the risk of another fall. Doctors, families and caregivers can help by addressing medical risk factors and making homes safer, especially walkways, bathrooms and stairways.

The association’s Ogun State chairman, Dr Ibraheem Opeewe, called for greater support to expand its outreach activities.
