Morocco: Tanger mayor placed in custody in an investigation into electoral irregularities

Tanger mayor Mounir Laymouri was taken into custody on September 28 following his arrest at Tanger airport upon returning from Spain. His detention is part of an investigation into alleged electoral irregularities during the September 23 vote in several polling stations in the city. Five other individuals, including two election supervisors, are also in provisional detention, while a central inspection commission and administrative inquiry have been launched by the Interior Ministry. The PAM party, of which Laymouri is a member, won the most seats in the legislative elections.
