Motorists Association Opposes Proposed Thika Expressway

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) opposes the proposed 60-kilometre elevated expressway between Nairobi and Thika, estimated to cost more than Ksh150 billion. It says the existing Thika Superhighway already has road capacity and infrastructure for fast traffic, and warns the elevated structure could block sunlight, worsen air quality and trap noise. MAK also fears years of disruption and a sharp decline in the value of businesses along the route, while President William Ruto is expected to attend a groundbreaking ceremony by December 2026. Under a public-private partnership, the project would connect Thika to Museum Hill in Nairobi via Ruiru and Juja.
