A consortium of 30 journalists coordinated by Forbidden Stories revealed that figures linked to the ruling party Frelimo and Mozambican security forces are involved in identifying and targeting government critics. Since the 2024 elections, five journalists have been killed and two have been poisoned. The murder of Elvino Dias, lawyer for presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, and Paulo Guambe on October 19, 2024, is one of the most high-profile. A 2025 Human Rights Watch report states that Mozambican authorities have failed to conduct credible investigations into these political killings.
