Mozambique: UN warns of climate risks linked to El Niño

The United Nations warns of climate risks associated with El Niño in Mozambique, which is among the three most vulnerable countries in Southern Africa, alongside Malawi and Madagascar. The UN’s OCHA reports over a 90% chance that the current El Niño episode will reach a very strong intensity by March 2027, potentially causing prolonged droughts, cyclones, and floods. UN special rapporteur Elisa Morgera emphasizes Mozambique's high vulnerability to climate change despite its minimal contribution and urges private companies, especially multinationals, to adhere to human rights and environmental obligations following an 11-day visit.
