MP Ron Bimwala calls for VAT cut to 1% on water and essential goods

National Assembly member Ron Bimwala is proposing a 1% VAT rate on packaged water, staple foods, some hygiene products, and health products and care for newborns. He made the proposal on October 30 during debate on the 2027 finance bill, challenging in particular the 8% rate applied to some goods since the supplementary finance law passed in August. The elected representative for Lukunga in Kinshasa and president of the Network of Young Parliamentarians says a cut would ease the burden on households facing inflation and improve access to goods essential to public health. His proposal remains subject to consideration during the next stages of the budget process.

Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding says the political participation is an effort to promote responsible healthcare policies and counter misinformation.
