Murder declines in Cape Town as extortion remains a threat

Cape Town has recorded a fourth consecutive quarterly decline in serious crime, with murder decreasing across all six policing areas where LEAP officers operate. Mayoral Committee Member JP Smith noted that while these figures are encouraging, extortion and extreme violence remain major concerns in parts of the city. The reduction in murder is attributed to increased resources and a data-driven policing approach since late 2024.
