Nairobi Rivers Commission Opens Nairobi Dam Spillway in El Niño Preparedness Efforts

The Nairobi Rivers Commission has completed the emergency spillway at Nairobi Dam, which is now open and carrying water as part of preparations for anticipated El Niño rains. CEO Brigadier (Rtd) Joseph Muracia confirmed the opening on October 19 and urged the public to remain vigilant. Work began on October 13 with the county government and other public agencies, and is intended to regulate reservoir levels and reduce flooding and erosion risks. Residents downstream, including in Nyayo Highrise, Kibera, Nairobi West and Madaraka, have been told to stay away from waterways; farther downstream areas may also face risks depending on rainfall.
