National Team: Idrissa Gana Gueye’s Absence Is More Complicated Than Announced

Aged 37, Idrissa Gana Gueye was left out of Patrick Vieira’s squad for Senegal’s two-match series against Sudan, despite strong performances for the national team during the previous international break and consistent form at club level. Vieira said the omission was his decision and that he had called Gueye to explain his reasons, while giving young Pape Demba Diop an opportunity. Lamine Camara, Pape Gueye, Pape Matar Sarr and returning midfielder Dion Lopy are also in the squad. Former Senegal international Ibrahima Sonko supports preparing younger players but cautions against sacrificing Gueye’s experience.
