NEMA Invites Comments on France-Backed University of Nairobi Engineering and Science Complex

Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is inviting public comments on the environmental and social impacts of the University of Nairobi’s proposed Science and Engineering Complex at its Chiromo Campus. In a notice dated October 27, it identified risks including construction noise, dust, traffic, water pollution, soil erosion and harm to biodiversity. NEMA recommended mitigation measures such as preserving 30-metre riparian reserves, clearing land in phases, replanting indigenous trees, and managing deliveries and waste safely. Announced at the Africa Forward Summit in May 2026, the 30,000-square-metre complex is jointly funded by the French Development Agency and the Kenyan and French governments.

Court Bars Government from Building Car Park at Nairobi Animal Orphanage

Nairobi’s Environment and Land Court barred the government from continuing construction of a car park at the Nairobi Animal Orphanage or undertaking work that could destroy any part of Nairobi National Park. The October 27 order was issued in a petition by 4,642 Kenyans against the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Attorney General and other respondents over development projects in the protected park. The dispute includes plans to relocate the orphanage near the Bomas of Kenya, which KWS says is needed to accommodate more rescued animals and visitors. Construction had been halted by court orders in July, and satellite images reviewed in August showed about 4.94 acres of vegetation cleared at the proposed site.

Algeria: 400 Moroccan industrial units cited in cross-border pollution case

At a symposium in Tlemcen, more than 400 industrial units in Morocco’s Oujda region were discussed in connection with pollution affecting Algeria’s Hammam Boughrara dam, which is fed in part by the cross-border Mouilah River. A study by Dr. Lotfi Benadda of the University of Tlemcen, based on data collected from 2009 to 2019, found deteriorating water quality, including elevated levels of organic matter and nutrients. Field observations also noted accumulated waste, foam, murky water and colored effluents near some industrial facilities in Oujda. The study also identifies potential pollution sources on the Algerian side and says further investigations are needed to establish responsibility.
