Niger promulgates provision criminalizing homosexuality

Niger's new penal code, promulgated by military authorities, punishes same-sex relations with 5 to 10 years imprisonment and a fine. The provision also targets LGBTQ+ organizations and considers homosexuality contrary to the country's social and cultural values. Some sex education courses were removed from school curricula in 2024. The measure, adopted in February, was not widely communicated.
