Niger: Russia Helped Foil Coup in Niger - - Official

The Nigerien government requested assistance from Russia to quell a mutiny that occurred between August 28 and 29. Russian ambassador to Niger, Viktor Voropaïev, stated that the mutinous soldiers were neutralized thanks to the intervention of Russian military forces. The rebels, frustrated by worsening insecurity, attempted to oust the military junta but were repelled by a joint offensive from Nigerien elite forces and Russian troops. Approximately 300 Russian soldiers are currently on the ground in Niger.
