Nigeria: 37 detainees die in custody, 21 security agents suspended

Thirty-seven detainees, arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, were found dead in a NSCDC cell in Minna on September 17. Niger State Governor Umar Bago mentioned the possibility of suffocation due to overcrowding. An independent committee has been established to investigate the circumstances of these deaths and detention conditions, with a two-week deadline to submit its findings.
