Night navigation banned after MV/MJP sinking on Lake Tanganyika

The Tanganyika provincial government has banned night navigation for small boats and whale boats on Lake Tanganyika following the sinking of the MV/MJP last Wednesday, which resulted in 43 survivors and several people still missing. Measures include stricter technical inspections, adherence to loading capacities, and safety standards, with passenger boats required to carry a manifest and all passengers and crew to wear life jackets. Governor Christian Kitungwa has ordered rescue services, the naval force, and the Red Cross to intensify search efforts and urged the public to avoid unapproved vessels.
